Born in 1947. Educated at Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. (Studies in Elektrical Engineering, Mathematics and Philosophy). 1972 diploma as "Diplomingenieur der Mathematik (Dipl.-Ing. math.)", 1975 Doctoral Dissertation on the Complexity of Hardware Tests.
Worked as computer scientist at TH Darmstadt, Universität Dortmund, Universität Kaiserslautern in Germany and Université de Paris VI, France. From 1979 to 1996 professor of informatics at Universität Bremen. Since 1996 professor of informatics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Teaches in Informatics and Society, Digital Media, and Theory of informatics.         

Research in Digital Media, informatics and Society, Theory of informatics, social- and cultural history of informatics and computing, and philosophical and theoretical Problems of informatics.
